MUSM7034

Museum Research Methods Unit of Study

Welcome

Welcome to MUSM7034 on Ning. This site is intended to serve students in the Museum Research Methods course in the Museum Studies program at the University of Sydney in Semester 1 2010.

It would be good to introduce yourself – once you have joined up just edit your profile. A photo would be great - save one on your computer 250x300dpi and it should upload easily.

In the forum you can join discussions or raise questions. You can share your learnings, find resources, keep in touch, and contact each other.

Resources

Information about the Entry Point Approach to the museum experience can be found here. You'll need to rummage around a bit.
And here [Word doc]

University of Sydney Library resources for Museum Studies courses are shown here.

ABS Information Paper on Comparable Statistics for Cultural Heritage Organisations [4916.0], available here.

Delicious is an online bookmarking service that uses tags. I have started the tag musm7034. You can search Delicious for resources that use this tag to find useful leads. When you join Delicious and add the musm7034 tag to new things that you find, others will be able to find them too by searching on Delicious.
This way, we can all contribute to building a useful resource.
Go to Delicious and type musm7034 in the search box.

Tips for writing assignments

A professional standard of clear writing is expected in this course. Here are 9tips for writing effective assignments.Proofread! You should not have spelling or grammatical errors. Papers that are submitted with more than 2 per page of typos, spelling or grammar errors will be returned, unmarked, for correction. When you re-submit the corrected version, it will be subject to whatever late penalty that applies. Do not treat the marker (me!) as your editor.Start with an outline. Don’t jump into…See More

Assignment Three - Feedback

I have finished marking Assignment Three and I enjoyed the many different topics that you chose to focus on. Many of your assignments were a delight to read.Grades ranged between 93 and 45, with most clustering in the 70s and 80s.Some simple things that lost marks were:1. Poor presentation, format, typos - in future I think that below-standard writing will be returned for editing before it is accepted for marking.2. Omissions such as no literature review, or not including graphs and tables as…See More

Assignment Two – Feedback

I have finished marking Assignment Two and I was impressed by your creativity and the effort many of you made in tackling the assignment.Grades ranged between 90 and 55, with most clustering in the 70s and 80s.Some simple things that lost people marks were:1. Poor presentation, format, typos – I recommend that those of you who struggle in this area should ask someone to proof read your work before you hand it in. Two or three of you would benefit from taking one of the courses on academic…See More

"Require answer to question"

Hi all, especially Gillian. Is there a right or wrong way to apply the "Require answer to question"?I mean, I want answers and this forces them to answer everything, but should I be kinder and give them the option of not answering?Should I only apply it to some questions?I'm thinking the demographic information might be an area people don't want to answer in particular, and the suggestion question - they might not have any.Any tips?MeganSee More

Assignment 2: Survey Design

The Museum Methods program has set up a Survey Monkey account for your use, so you will not need to open your own account to do ths assignment.

www.surveymonkey.com

Here is the user name and password.

name: museum_studies
password: research_methods

Each of you will be able to set up your own survey in this account. For clarity, please give your survey your own name.

If you prefer to use a different Survey Monkey account, that is OK.

Assignment 3: Research Proposal Paper

This assignment requires several steps, including:

Literature Review and Secondary Data Review.

For the literature review, a good example is Stephen Bitgood's paper in the reader. Another good example is Jennifer Berryman's literature review of economic benefit studies for libraries, that you can access here.

Lecture Slides
